Working to Reduce Violence in Kansas City

Like many Kansas Citians, I attended the 2024 Chiefs Super Bowl victory parade... I want to write about how much fun it was, how beautiful the weather was, and how overjoyed my two young boys (4 and 5 years old) were to see their favorite football stars go strolling by. But I can't. Because the day was ruined. Kansas City made national news again that day, not for winning the Super Bowl, but for another shooting. My family and I had safely left well before the shooting took place. But many hadn't. One life was lost, and 33 others were wounded. So when the Center for Conflict Resolution reached out for a video I couldn't have been more resolute about how important it was to spread the word of their work to use restorative practices to reduce violence across Kansas City. They work closely with schools, communities, and reentry spaces to mediate and educate on ways to solve conflict without violence. Under new leadership and with an expanded scope and direction, the video we built together and the story we told speaks of a city of citizens working toward a common goal; a safer Kansas City. A city where an argument can break out in a crowded space and end with a peaceful resolution.
